  10.     The third annual Technical Interchange Workshop, a meeting
  11. of scientists, engineers and educators from across the country to
  12. showcase space technology research and development activities,
  13. will be held at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Jan. 23-25.  
  14.     This year, the workshop will address the growing shortage of
  15. science and engineering graduates and examine issues of minority
  16. recruitment in the Earth, physical and engineering sciences.
  17.     The workshop will coincide with a Community Education
  18. Outreach Exhibition, to be held at the Pasadena Convention
  19. Center.  The exhibition of booths, displays and demonstrations
  20. will feature the work of community service and outreach
  21. organizations dedicated to promoting science education. 
  22.     Among the many special presentations and technical workshops
  23. offered by approximately 40 participating scientific and academic
  24. institutions, the conference will include the following topics:
  25.     * The status of JPL minority science and engineering         
  26.        initiatives.
  27.  
  28.     * Overview and formal signing of a memorandum of             
  29.        understanding with the University of Texas at El Paso to   
  30.        encourage educational excellence for Hispanic Americans.
  31.  
  32.     * Native American culture and the present system of higher   
  33.        education; recommended changes from a Native American      
  34.        perspective.
  35.  
  36.     * New partnerships: NASA's Space Technology and Utilization  
  37.        Program, a consortium of historically black colleges and   
  38.        universities to promote science and engineering research   
  39.        and development activities.

  47.     * NASA's role in providing prime contractor and              
  48.        subcontractor support to minority businesses.

  50.     * Science is kids' stuff: Science for early educational      
  51.        development.

  53.     The Technical Interchange Workshop will be held in JPL's von
  54. Kármán Auditorium.  The Pasadena Community Outreach Exhibition
  55. will take place Jan. 23 on the lower level of the Convention
  56. Center, located at 300 E. Green St.  Exhibits will open at 5:30
  57. p.m. and presentations will run from 6:30 p.m. - 9 p.m.
